MAKONNEN...RULER
Nyabinghi,
My son will be 17 years old in November and I have been searching for the meaning of his name(Macanen Jr.) for years. He is named after his dad, and his dad was named by his father who practiced the Rastafari religion at that time. However, when my son's father was born, his dad was no where to be found so the name was misspelled(M-a-c-a-n-e-n) by his mother. She told me she later saw the correct spelling(Makonnen), but never knew what it meant. I thank you so much for posting this.

I think parents really need to consider the names they give their children, because kids sometimes act according to what they're named. And yes my son does act like he rules our household - I have to constantly remind him that there's only one ruler & that's me!

Thanks again, your posting made my night.

RE: Rastafari names
Our names are Sheridan Hamilton and Lindsey Horton and we are doing a project for school where we have to interview someone of a certain religion. We were interested in the Rastafari religion and I was wondering if you could answer some short questions for us.

Just e-mail me back at
sheridan.hamilton@ymail.com
Thanks!

RE: Rastafari names
I have been interested in names for a long time, and have had great opportunities to study them,in America, girls tend to get stuck with endearing little girl names, with cutesy spellings, often ending with the diminutive "i" or "y", which is why virtually every boy's name ending with this sound has been appropriated for females--Sydney is now almost exclusively a female name. Cutesy names do not invite people to take these women seriously.
